Intercultural dimensions in the creation of the composer Laurentiu Gondiu

Being nurtured under the influence of several musical cultures, the composer Laurentiu Gondiu is a representative exponent of modern musical inter-culturalism, synthesizing multiple sound identities in his compositional writings. In his creative course, we can identify an intermixture of tendencies from western cultural configurations involving forms, genres and motifs of Romanian folklore origin, Balkan influences, as well as from the East, the Arab world and the Middle East. Author of vocal-symphonic and chamber music, as well as of music for theatre and TV, L. Gondiu focuses on developing the orchestral technology, but especially on approaching different aesthetics for each work, various ethno trends – in Balkan, Oriental, neo music of neoromantic, neoimpressionism, neoclassical type, or of archetypal dimension – in the Byzantine music, or pop music and jazz. Starting from Romanian folklore and the Byzantine music, the optics greatly expands and any traditions become „useful”, various elements are assembled to achieve the integrity of the work. Thus, the intercultural dimensions are projected into music, through the clash at factual, modal, acoustic, rhythmic and structural levels of patterns from different cultural areas, a phenomenon often defined as meta-stylistics, one of the many meta-effects, ofsynthesis, of globalization.
